Artificial arthropod burrow survey kits for Grassland Earless Dragon
Pelican Studios designs and manufactures artificial arthropod burrow (“spider tube”) survey kits in accordance with the DCCEEW Survey Guidelines. These survey kits are used for targeted surveys and monitoring programs for Grassland Earless Dragon species of Southeastern Australia listed as threatened under the Commonwealth Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, including the Victorian Grassland Earless Dragon (Tympanocryptis pinguicolla).
The survey kits are designed to replicate the functional characteristics of natural arthropod burrows, enabling consistent, repeatable survey conditions across multiple sites and monitoring periods.
Each kit comprises a 3D-printed inner spider tube with a textured surface designed to replicate spider burrows utilised by Grassland Earless Dragons, combined with a formed sheet metal roof that provides overhead protection and shade.
The kits are manufactured to order and supplied to support targeted survey and monitoring programs. Design and fabrication prioritise ease of handling, installation, and maintenance, while materials have been selected to ensure durability under outdoor field conditions and repeated deployment. These kits support efficient field workflows and reliable data collection.
